Working with the Public

Pro Bono Program - Working with Community Based Organizations

The FPA is a source of expertise for a variety of non-profit organizations. These groups may ask us to present a program to their clients, or to their volunteers and staff. We may also be asked to counsel individual clients of these organizations. Some examples are Pacific Garden Mission, Boys and Girls Clubs, Jewish Child and Family Services, and AgeOptions.

Money Smart Week

Money Smart Week® is a financial education campaign offering hundreds of programs, classes, and activities to consumers of all ages and income levels. These educational events are carried out by financial institutions, non-profit groups, government agencies, schools, and libraries. The week showcases these organizations’ educational resources, strengthens private-public partnerships, engages the media, and connects people with those who can help them learn. The Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago coordinates the effort because individuals and communities benefit when consumers are making informed decisions about their personal finances.

Launched in Chicago in 2002, Money Smart Weeks are now held in more than 50 small to large cities in Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Michigan and Wisconsin. In addition, Money Smart Week continues to spread beyond the Midwest in places like Denver, Houston, Kansas City, Nebraska, Oregon, Washington, and West Virginia.

Money Smart Week activities appeal to a wide variety of consumers. These events are held throughout Chicago and its suburbs at convenient times and in several different languages. Money Smart partners continued to expand their subject offerings and reach new audiences. In 2011, More than 600 events and activities were offered and the number of attendees and participants exceeded 32,500.

Financial Planning Days

Chicago Financial Planning Day was organized as part of the national Financial Planning Days initiative in partnership with City of Chicago, CFP Board, Financial Planning Association, Foundation for Financial Planning, and the U.S. Conference of Mayors.

The Financial Planning Days concept is simple – financial planners volunteer to meet one-on-one with consumers to offer personalized financial planning information on a pro bono basis. The event also features financial planners presenting educational workshops on key financial planning topics.

The benefits are plentiful – providing the public with the practical financial information they need and increasing recognition of the value of financial planning in the Chicago community. At a time when many Chicago residents are struggling as a result of the recent economic turmoil, Financial Planning Day generates high levels of attendance and appreciation.

Junior Achievement

FPA of Illinois in conjunction with Junior Achievement brings financial awareness to young minds. Utilizing Junior Achievement’s mission statement, they work “to inspire and prepare young people to embrace free enterprise and succeed in a global economy”.
Students learn about the concepts of limited resources, the difference between needs and wants, and even how to start saving money. FPA of Illinois volunteers participate as a part of Junior Achievement's unique classroom educational programs that inspire young people to succeed in a global economy.

Junior Achievement has a long track record of teaching kindergarten through high school students about the work world, financial literacy and entrepreneurship, and this school year will reach over 390,000 students throughout metro Chicagoland area. Research shows that kids who have gone through the Junior Achievement programs have demonstrated an increased desire to stay in school, preparedness to enter the workforce and a sense of economic empowerment.

The kids get the right amount of exposure to the concepts of starting a business, being an owner and being an employee. They also learn about the interdependence we have with our coworkers in business as well as our counterparts around the globe.

Speaking at Libraries

FPA of Illinois developed a community outreach program that matches FPA Illinois members with their local area public libraries.

We have made great inroads in outlining the mission of the FPA and its members to various library systems, including a presentation to members of the North Suburban Library System (NSLS). The NSLS is comprised of 650 academic, public, school, and special libraries in north suburban Cook, Kane, Lake and McHenry counties.

Several libraries now support free community outreach sessions where members of FPA of Illinois spend several hours per month answering financial planning questions one-on-one with library patrons. In addition, many members have also been regular speakers during National Financial Planning Week and the Federal Reserve of Chicago’s Money Smart Week.
